Hotel Roma, Újezd 24, Praha
This historical building is located on the corner of Újezd and Říční streets, opposite Petřín hill in Malá Strana. The house had been dilapidating for many years and if it were not for a strong investor, the demanding reconstruction could not be realized. A new building was constructed with taste in the interior block with garden and it contributed to the overall evaluation of the place. The location of the building is very advantageous because it is in a tourist-attractive area. That is why it is totally natural to use it for a hotel. Apart from rooms for guests, there are also flats to be rented in the upper floors. There is an art gallery and a shop with fabrics in the ground floor. The hotel hall can be accessed both from Újezd and from Říční street. Both entrances are vaulted; there are indirect lights on the walls. The light is soft and it fills in the whole entrance space. The main aim was to create, by means of light, such atmosphere that will evoke pleasant feelings in the incoming guests. There is a gallery of old masters´art in the historical part, parallel with Říční street. Ceiling electricity-leading rails with halogen dimmable lights were used for the lighting of the exposition. The choice of lighting fittings had to be made with regards to the protection of exhibited objects. Low intensity of lighting on the pictures, among other things, contributes to the cosy atmosphere of the gallery and it gives the space importance that is proportional to the objects that are to be sold.
A different situation arose regarding the shop with fabrics where the aim was to attract the largest amount of possible customers. Lighting fittings are, as to design, the same as those in the gallery. However, they are furnished with metal-halide lamps and their intensity of lighting ranges up to hundreds of luxs.
The hotel hall is situated on the ground floor of the new building and it is connected with the historical building by means of glass ceiling. The main lighting set is realized with recessed lighting fittings with halogen bulbs that are dimmable in several light circles. This solution enables to create both accented and dim lighting in several light scenes. Lighting of a grand sea aquarium together with art object on the walls is very evocative.
